The poor dog, called Cala, was extremely malnourished she couldn’t stand. And when she sits on the mound of rags under her, the short chain on her neck prevented her from being able to fully rest her head. Instead, it would be hanging from the shackle.
Cala, who was owned by a mechanic, was kept as the guard dog in a shop in San Jose, Costa Rica. But she was rarely fed and was never taken to a vet whenever she gets sick. Her health declined too quick that if help came later than it did, Cala would have not made it.
Thankfully, concerned neighbors contacted the authorities and the team of Territorio de Zaguates, the local sanctuary where more than a hundred dogs are cared for. They pulled Cala out and brought her straight to the vet’s clinic where she received treatment. Cala was then transferred to the care of Territorio de Zaguates to help her physical and emotional wounds.
“The healing process for her was slow. She’s still in pain every time her wounds are cleaned, especially the laceration on her neck,” said Territorio de Zaguates Founder Lya Battle. “It was difficult for her and for us. Although later on, she understood how things work and dealt with them like a real champ.”
But she’s yet to be out of the woods. One night, some men snuck in the sanctuary, laying out poisoned bait sausages that left 16 dogs lifeless. Cala, having eaten the sausage, survived but got really sick. She battled neurological issues for a couple of months, but somehow, bounced back.
After the incident, Cala was placed under foster care. Her mischievous puppy behaviors started to come out but Cala’s foster mom didn’t seem to mind at all. It may be quite a while before Cala finds her forever home, but until then, her foster family’s more than happy to shower her with lots of love and affection.
