Autism brings varying degrees of speech delay in children born with it. With the help of therapeutic sessions intended for kids with special needs, some children gradually improve in their speech for a time being. However, there are other therapies that might just bring out positive results in autistic children.
Johnny, an 8-year old boy living in Georgia, has been going through special therapy for special children since he was a toddler. He knows how to speak and can read well but his parents could not convince him to interact and socialize with other kids of his age. He is easily triggered in unfamiliar situations that send him into tantrums or terror or both.
Johnny has sought comfort in solitary play, predictable routines and his favorite activity is playing with marbles in silence.
Everything changed when they brought in a rescued dog named Xena. The dog went through unspeakable torture but survived to bring healing and hope to their family. Johnny gained an instant liking to his new friend. He forged a connection to the dog that people consider it a miracle.
The dog became his confidant that brings out the best in him. Johnny became playful, active and developed fondness for singing. He was able to assess everything he sees and experience. He became astonishingly talkative that he has so much to say about his activities and subjects in school. He became the happiest child his parents could have known.
Xena’s past was so cruel that the people who rescued her could not believe she was able to survive the abuse. She was brought in to the DeKalb County Animal Services and was treated with fluids, nutritional supplements and an immediate visit by the veterinarian; she slowly recovered over time.
This warrior puppy proved to have a future mission in saving Johnny’s life by becoming his best friend for life.
