For the last 9 months, Brindle has been struggling since his dad has to be away. JD Aument serves as an Army Reserves firefighter and is serving overseas. From the day he left, Brindle has been missing JD so dearly.
“He’s just so sad without JD here,” said Brindle’s mom, Rachel Marie Aument. “Don’t get me wrong, Brindle loves me, but I am not his person.”
Before the adoption, Brindle was simply another lonely shelter dog waiting for someone to be his friend. With JD, the lovely pooch found one. Since then, JD and Brindle have become inseparable, until JD got deployed last year.
Without JD at home, Xander, their other dog, has been struggling, too. However, Xander’s more attached to mom, so it’s a little easier to cope. But Brindle, he’s just been in constant heartache. There were days when he’d just sit by the window and cry.
Clearly, the poor dog has been searching for any of his dad’s sign. And earlier last week, he finally got one. JD prepared a little token of his love and sent it all the way from his station to home – it was one of his unwashed shirts that still bear his scent.

“There was not a doubt; he knew immediately that it was his shirt,” said Rachel. “I cried so hard while I recorded Brindle’s reaction.”
Somehow, JD’s back. Brindle couldn’t be any happier that he carried it up to his bed and slept on it for the whole day. But Rachel had a rather brighter idea. Instead of having Brindle carry his dad’s shirt everywhere, she had him wear it.
“He might have felt a little abandonment after JD left,” said Rachel. “But with the shirt, it helped reassure Brindle that JD still loves him and that he’s coming back.”
Luckily for Brindle, he wouldn’t have to wait and rely on JD’s shirt for much longer. Within a month or so, JD’s coming back home. And soon, Brindle can sniff his dad’s scent without the need for a shirt.
